Mid-Fielders
“The Runners”
When “we” have the ball:
1. Keep possession between you. DON’T give the ball away unnecessarily.
2. LOOK for opportunities to pass, dribble forward. Don’t rush.
3. ACCLERATE QUICKLY to support the forwards.
4. Get into the box for crosses. Support the forwards.
5. Don’t first-time the ball away. Get the ball under control and create plays.
6. Try to RUN AWAY from the player covering you.
When “they” have the ball:
1. Be clever in defending. Don’t dive into tackles; guide players to their weak foot.
2. Know who you are covering. ALWAYS have the ball ahead of you. Race back
to help defense.
3. Use your body to shoulder charge fairly.
4. Defend tightly in your own half. Be ready to sprint with your man. DON’T stop
until you regain possession of the ball. (This takes great fitness.)
5. LEARN to help each other. TALK to each other often. “Cover her”, “I’m
helping you”.
6. CONCENTRATE on your player during throw-ins, corners and free kicks.
