OTTAWA – Brampton’s Kadeisha Buchanan, a sophomore defender with the University of West Virginia has received a slew of honours in recent weeks. That includes being the finalist for the 2014 Canadian Player of the Year and the under-20 Player of the Year, an award she won last year. She is also a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy, the highest honour for a soccer player.
Buchanan is one of 16 student-athletes up for the award and one of only two sophomores. The top three point-getters voted on by National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) members and fans will be announced later this month with the winner announced January 9. The graduate of Cardinal Leger has also been named to the All-American First Team. She is the only sophomore on the First Team and the first West Virginia player to be a First Team All-American since 2003. Her other recent honours include winning her second Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and her second All Big-12 honour.
A starter at centre back for all 20 matches she was available for, Buchanan helped the No. 7 ranked Mountaineers post 12 shutouts, and did not allow a goal on the road in Big 12 matches. She had career highs with three goals, two assists and eight points. An All Big-12 Academic Soccer Team honouree, Buchanan, a communications studies major, is a member of the Dean’s List, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll and the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
She missed two games with West Virginia as she was called up to play with Canada’s senior national team for a pair of friendlies in October. The women’s player will be selected in voting by Canadian media and coaches.
